Last year Google unveiled and launched their Google Cardboard VR kit, which can be described as a budget, DIY version of the virtual reality headset Oculus Rift. It is made out of cardboard sheet, Velcro, two plastic lenses and a magnet and is used with your Android smartphone. We have tried it here at the office and it’s safe to say we all enjoyed it!

The headset includes an NFC tag, and now Knit, a creative technology agency, has developed objects like postcards, keys, trading cards etc. fully equipped with NFC to be used with the headset. They explain: “An NFC-tagged postcard could be placed on the headset to let a holidaymaker see what a holiday resort is like before buying, or a cardboard key could let someone go on a virtual tour of a new car. All the user has to do is switch on the NFC feature of their smartphone, put it in the headset and insert the cardboard object into the headset, the technology does the rest.” Sounds easy enough!

Nick Thompson, founding partner at Knit says: “After the initial hype surrounding VR, the launch of Oculus Rift and now Google Cardboard has been a game changer. VR has become refined, usable and affordable to the masses. VR now offers brands the opportunity to truly immerse the consumer in the product and brand experiences."
